A video is going viral on Facebook where a foreigner can be seen making fun of the Indian accent by calling it the “least attractive accent in the world”.
Foreigner Mocks Indian Accent and calls it “Least Attractive”
The man in the viral video plays a video of the Indian girl and then comments on the accent of the Indians. In the video, the man says (using the Indian accent),
“Things that women have done that give me the ick, No.1 is having an Indian accent because the Indian accent is actually the most unattractive accent on the face of the planet. There is no accent that is less attractive than the Indian accent. And that is because they are known for the tech support and then scam us.”
While there is truth that a lot of tech support scams come from many Asian countries, including India and Bangladesh, calling the Indian accent “least attractive” is downright absurd and racist.
The video received lots of likes and support comments from many of the English-speaking natives who echoed that the Indian accent is very unattractive.
The creator of the above video may not know that India is one of the largest English-speaking populations in the world. Millions of Indians work in global industries such as technology, medicine, academia, aviation, customer service, and multinational business communication. Over the decades, the Indian accent has become familiar worldwide because of India’s strong presence in the IT and outsourcing sectors.
While humour and imitation are common on the internet, there is a thin line between comedy and outright mockery, coming from prejudice.
A 2024 study published in ScienceDirect says that discrimination in the workplace on the basis of accent is quite rampant. Not only that, but forming a positive perception of the interview candidates is difficult if they speak with a non-standard accent.
Who is the creator?
The creator, who is mocking the Indian accent in the video, runs a Facebook account by the name of “That Zona Guy”. He often makes reels on relationship issues. He has around 450K followers.
