Dhruv Rathee has provoked a debate with his firm statements regarding political pressure, freedom of expression and the part that celebrities should play in public life.
In a recent interview with TheRedMike, Rathee asked why so many well-known Bollywood stars fail to speak up about important political issues.
The discussion has once again drawn attention to the connection between the film industry and those in power.
What Did Dhruv Rathee Say About Bollywood Stars?
Rathee encouraged famous actors to use their influence in order to speak up about issues that affect the country rather than staying quiet out of fear of losing their film roles, endorsements, or professional relationships.
“Except Few, most of Bollywood celebrities are fearful. These fearful celebrities need to understand that thngs like their reputation, image and money have no value if they cannot use it for the better. What will you do of so much money? Try and see the experience of the common man and try to change the things in the country so that the country improves and prospers. “
“Some Bollywood insiders told me that these celebrities have been told to not speak against the government. Many celebs are staying quiet because they have done some small acts of corruption here and there. If everyone raises their voice, then the government will do what? Will they jail everyone from Bollywood? If the police force raises its voice against this dictatorship, will the entire police be suspended or terminated by the government? If everyone raises voice together, the government can’t do anything.”
In the interview, Rathee cited an example of Salman Khan’s next movie, Maatrubhumi: May War Rest in Peace, which was originally called Battle of Galwan.
He stated that the film had been reshot under political pressure in order to make its portrayal of China less harsh.
Rathee alleges that the prime minister is so afraid that he is unable to even allow films portray the real face about China and America. The Youtuber also opined that the PM lacks courage to face criticism which is why he doesn’t do any press conference.
Why Are His Remarks Getting Attention?
His remarks come in the light of the wider political controversy that followed his arrest in relation to a planned protest in Delhi. After his release, he said that the situation was similar to an undeclared Emergency and criticised what he sees as pressure being exerted on democratic institutions. However, these are his political opinions, not legally established findings.
The case raises a more general question as to whether or not someone who is famous has a duty to speak out, or whether it should be a personal choice to remain silent.
