Bollywood actor Imran Khan, known for films like Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Na and Delhi Belly, is at the centre of a political and legal controversy. The actor has been asked by Mumbai Police to move out of India by October 31, raising queries about the actor’s involvement in a protest and rumours that he was paid ₹15 lakh, which were going around on social media.

Why Has Imran Khan Been Asked to Leave India?

The Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO) on October 15, 2026, issued a notice to Imran to leave India on October 28. The action comes after his involvement in a protest demanding resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar at August Kranti Maidan in Mumbai on Oct 10.

Imran is an American citizen and has an Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) card. BJP leader Kirit Somaiya had complained that he was not a part of the show. The authorities have reportedly used the Immigration and Foreigners Act, 2025. Imran’s lawyers have indicated that they will seek to set aside the notice in the Bombay High Court. The allegations are not a final judgment determination.

Is Imran Khan’s Participation in Protest Legal?

It appears that the decision by Mumbai Police to order the actor to move out of India comes due to the actor’s participation in the CJP protest in Mumbai. Imran and his girlfriend Lekha Washington were detained by the Mumbai Police.

Imran Khan has become a US citizen and holds an OCI card. OCI card holders can no longer vote in India. While their participation in protests can be questioned, there is no law that blanket bans OCI people from participating in protests.

OCI card holders do not enjoy the constitutional rights of Indian citizens, and the government can terminate the OCI citizenship of an individual for violating rules.

Was Imran Khan Offered ₹15 Lakh?

There has been a rumour viraling on social media that Imran was offered ₹15 lakh to speak against CJP protests which he declined. Up until now, however, there have been no credible news reports that this is what he was offered.

So far, he has received a notice to vacate India and is reported to be planning to challenge the notice in court. No claim of Rs. 15 lakh is to be considered verified until reliable evidence is produced.
