Journalist Ajit Anjum recently shared an incident of Cyber Fraud where he lost nearly Rs 12000 by making the payment to the scammer.
In the recent video on his channel, Ajit Anjum mentioned that he got a request from his well-known friend on WhatsApp to make a payment as his friend’s UPI had been blocked.
The journalist made a payment, but to his surprise, he got a request again from the same friend, this time for payment for other purpose. The journalist thought of helping him and instructued his colleague to make the payment.
However, the request kept coming from the same friend. Sensing an unusual habit, Ajit Anjum decided to call his friend to know the matter. To his surprise, his friend received the call and revealed that his WhatsApp had been hacked, which revealed the entire suspense.
His friend revealed that many of his WhatsApp contacts have been scammed in a similar manner and that he is calling them personally to not make any payments on the QR code sent through WhatsApp.
However, laughing at his own mistake, Ajit Anjum urged people to remain extremely cautious while responding to payment requests received through WhatsApp. He warned that cyber fraudsters often hack or gain access to accounts of known contacts to exploit trust and scam others into transferring money without verification.
This type of fraud has become increasingly common in India over the last few years. Scammers frequently target WhatsApp accounts, social media profiles like Facebook, and even phone numbers to impersonate friends, relatives, or colleagues and ask for urgent money transfers.
We strongly believe that if someone requests money through text, it would be a safe way to confirm with them telephonically or in person before making the payment.
