Ravi Chandran Ashwin have indirectly supported Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir’s decision to replace Rohit Sharma with Shubhman Gill as the ODI Captain. Ever since the decision was made to remove Sharma as the ODI Captain, there have been rumors that the team management may remove.
In his recent video, Ashwin deciphered the decision that could have compelled Ajit Agarkar and Gautam Gambhir to remove Rohit Sharma as ODI Captain and that has nothing to do with the batter’s captaincy ability.
“Selectors are very clear on that front. Based on the players’ last performance, they are promised a place in the squad, and they’ve got it. But they do doubt their fitness levels will be maintained till the 2027 World Cup.
So they want to take a different leadership direction. Say they make Rohit the captain, and in 2026, they realise that he might not be fit for the 2027 World Cup. They don’t have much time to groom the next leader.
And from their selection perspective, be it Ajit or whoever is involved, they have taken a rational decision. I am talking about the sensitivity with which these players should be dealt.”

The former off spinner has urged the Indian think tank to have a platform in place that allows valuable knowledge transfer of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli.
Even Sourav Ganguly has come in support of Gautam Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar and opined that removal of someone like Rohit Sharma is not a new thing as it happened to him and Dravid also. He also mentioned that the same will happen to Shubhman Gill also when his time will come.
It is to be noted that while Rohit Sharma did not had any injury issues, his excess weight at the age of 38 was always a concern. However, in the last few months, Rohit Sharma can be seen with reduced weight which proves that he was committed to being fit till to captain the side in 2027 ODI World Cup. Sharma in his interview to Vimal Kumar had clearly stated that he wants to play the 2027 ODI WC.
