After the Diwali, the Delhi AQI has skyrocketed and is in the Hazardous range. The majority of areas in Delhi are well above the 300 AQI which is significantly dangerous.

What is even more disturbing that nearly 30% of those cities are in the ‘Hazardious’ range while the rest are in the ‘Severe’ range.

The disturbing fact was shared on Reddit and netizens are commenting sarcastically that they want all Indian cities to enter 100 most polluted cities in World.

As per the observation around 1.34 a.m. on 22nd October, Haripur tops the list followed by Jalandhar and Ludhiana. The four Non-Indian cities which are also in the top 100 are Lahore, Lumbini Sanskritik (Nepal), Bharatput (Nepal), and Kirtipur (Nepal).

Is Crackers the reason for Delhi AQI Right Now?

Many commentors on Reddit have claimed that the AQI of Delhi was already high pre-Diwali and that that levels have only marginally increased post-Diwali. Many people identified that stubble burning, which mainly happens at this time, is the major cause of severe AQI in Delhi.

Experts have previously suggested that the worsening air quality in Delhi and other northern cities cannot be attributed to a single cause.

Health professionals have issued advisories urging citizens to limit outdoor activity and use N95 masks when stepping out.

Schools in some areas are considering temporary closures as visibility drops and respiratory complaints surge. Despite repeated court interventions and government schemes, India’s battle against air pollution appears far from over, raising urgent questions about policy enforcement and long-term urban planning.
