Sabeer Bhatia, the co-founder of Hotmail recently revealed in his Instagram video about his side hustle after coming to Caltech University.
As per Sabeer, he was side-hustling two jobs, one as a waiter and the other as a Librarian. The hotmail co-founder gives an important lession from his experience that dignity should not be dependent on the nature of job.
He also highlighted that many people in India need to be take care of their own stuff like house cleaning, washing, cooking and etc in order to become more grateful and to have respectful attitude towards labour people who do those kind of jobs.
“When I first came to Caltech as a student, I found two jobs. One as a librarian and two as a waiter at the Caltech Faculty Club. And I loved both of them because what they taught me was dignity of labour.
You should not be afraid to do any kind of job. Unfortunately, in India because there are so many people, we don’t clean our own dishes, we don’t make our own beds, we don’t do our own cooking, we don’t clean our own rooms.
We don’t drive our own cars because we’ve got drivers to do that. But then you miss out on an essential experience in life. One, of learning how to do things on your own. And two, of appreciating that somebody is doing something for you and being thankful for that. Gratitude comes to you from actually doing stuff with your own hands.”

In many of his podcasts, Sabeer Bhatia had been an outspoken critic of the Indian government on matters like AQI, corruption and economic growth.
On many occasions, he shared about his ordeal with the bureaucracy in younger days after his efforts to negotiate with the Indian government to increase his scholdarship aid to 25% (For Caltech) did not materialize despite his family’s connections with the influential people. Luckily, fortune favoured him and his plea of increase in scholarship to 75% (from 72%) was accepted by the Caltech University. The rest is history as we know.
